Acne and rosacea treatment in Cairns

Almost everyone is affected by acne at some time in their lives. Although usually a condition of young adults, it can affect almost all ages. For many people it can be an embarrassing condition that can lead to a loss of confidence and withdrawal from social and sporting activities. In severe cases, it can even lead to permanent scarring.

Rosacea tends to start later in life with redness typically in the central part of the face. It is often associated with pimples. Treatments are now available for all degrees and stages, including treatment for redness and scarring.

Outcomes & Expectations

Fortunately these days there are many effective treatments that are available. The type of treatment you have will be determined by the severity of the condition, so it is important to get this properly assessed by a medical professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have acne?

The good news is, it’s not from eating chocolate. It’s due to your hormones. That’s why acne usually occurs around adolescence when hormones called androgens stimulate sebaceous glands in your skin to grow large and make a product called sebum. These glands then get blocked and fill up with sebum and dead skin cells. This provides a perfect environment for some bacteria that normally live on your skin to overgrow and cause inflammation.

What causes rosacea?

No-one is quite sure why some people get rosacea. So while sometimes it can be associated with some diseases or hormones, most of the time, we just don’t know. What we do know is that a large number of things will aggravate or trigger it. These include sun exposure, stress, alcohol, hot weather for some people and cold weather for others, exercise, spicy foods, certain cosmetics and many more. The triggers are different for different people.

Can I do anything about it?

Mild acne and rosacea can often be treated with simple topical treatments. More severe disease however, needs a different approach. In addition to medication, other treatments can help.

Laser treatment, by gently heating the skin, can also be used to treat marks and scars left by acne and reduce the redness of rosacea. In doing so, the treatment improves your skin texture and also reduces pore size.

Pearl Fractional targets the dermis where it stimulates collagen production and so can be used to deal with deeper scars.

Having acne can be tough to put up with, but there are definitely things you can do. At Cairns Skin Centre, we can advise and help you with a range of treatment options specific for your skin.
