New skin centre begins treating patients

The first medical centre in Far North Queensland to offer the services of skin cancer doctors, a plastic surgeon, and a dermatologist has begun treating patients in Cairns.

Cairns Skin Centre, in Manoora, is a new centre of excellence focusing on all skin-related medical conditions including skin cancer, general dermatology, leg veins, cosmetic medicine and plastic surgery. It is the brain-child of local GPs Dr Anthony Mahler and Dr Uri Scelwyn.

Dr Scelwyn said: “We’ve brought together some of the most experienced medical practitioners in the region including Plastic Surgeon Dr Nita Ling, Consultant Dermatologist Dr Simon Tucker, Varicose Vein Doctor Paul Davis, and a number of skin cancer doctors. The result is a true centre of expertise and experience.”

He said Cairns Skin Centre offers a vital service here in Far North Queensland, which is recognised as having some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and where sun-induced skin ageing is an increasing problem.

“More than 53 per cent of adults in Cairns get sunburnt every year – a rate 14 per cent higher than the Queensland average,” he said.

“The result is a lot of skin cancer in our region and a huge need, among locals, for regular skin checks.
“Patients who get their skin checked at Cairns Skin Centre have the choice of seeing a Dermatologist or one of the other doctors in the skin cancer clinic – all of whom are members of the Skin Cancer College of Australasia.

“Procedures can be carried out by any of the doctors or, in more complicated cases, by Plastic Surgeon Dr Nita Ling,” said Dr Scelwyn.

“Dr Ling also performs a wide range of cosmetic surgery such as tummy tucks, ‘lifts’, and other advanced procedures.”
Cairns Skin Centre is also joined by Cosmetic Nurse Terry Hall – previously of Cairns Cosmetic Physicians.

“Our cosmetic team offers anti-wrinkle treatment, dermal filler, and rejuvenation procedures,” said Dr Scelwyn, “but it has also been recognised as the leading centre in Far North Queensland for leg vein treatments ranging from spider veins to more severe varicose veins.
