Hugh Jackman’s skin cancer scare

He may not live here in Cairns where we have some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, but X-Men star Hugh Jackman had a scare recently – and took to social media to remind us to get checked regularly.

The Hollywood heart-throb, best known for playing the superhero Wolverine, made the announcement on his Instagram account, saying: “An example of what happens when you don’t wear sunscreen.

“Basal Cell. The mildest form of cancer but serious, nonetheless.

“PLEASE USE SUNSCREEN and get regular check-ups,” Mr Jackman said.

Get checked for skin cancer regularly

Here in Cairns we strongly encourage you to regularly check your skin at home using the SCAN method and, if you see anything that concerns you, make an appointment with Dermatologist Dr Simon Tucker or one of our skin cancer doctors immediately.

It’s not worth the risk – Queensland has some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with around 3000 cases of melanoma and more than 130,000 cases of other skin cancer diagnosed annually.
