Cairns doctors recommend annual skin cancer checks

It’s scary to think that half of us living here in Queensland get sunburnt each year – because it increases your risk of getting skin cancer.

That’s why, here in Cairns, doctors recommend you get your skin checked by a professional at least once every year.

The check usually only takes between 10 and 15 minutes, so you can do it during your lunch break.

When was your last skin check?

If you can’t remember the last time you had a professional skin cancer check, it’s definitely time that you made an appointment today with one of the skin cancer doctors at Cairns Skin Centre.

A skin check does two things. Firstly we’ll look at any suspicious spots that you might have to see if they are, of if they have the potential to become, skin cancer. And secondly, it gives us a record of the spots on your skin so that we can monitor them over time – this is one of the best ways that we can see if any spots are changing.

Your skin cancer doctor will take photographs of any spots that he or she believes are suspicious. If they believe any of your spots are suspicious, they’ll do a biopsy to do further tests.

What happens if my doctor finds skin cancer?

Most of the time, skin cancer can be treated very easily – in some cases, skin cancer can be treated with creams, rather than surgery, but you need to talk to your skin cancer doctor about this.

If surgery is needed, most of the time we can do this in our purpose-built operating rooms at Cairns Skin Centre. More complicated procedures might need to be done by a specialist such as Dermatologist Dr Simon Tucker who works at the Centre.
